the radio, door light, and key chime will not work; also the dashboard light will not come on. I think that the room fuse controls the engine and if I remove it completely, then I cannot start the car. I would love to hear the radio does anyone have any suggestions as to what come help me. Please be nice I am a girl and am in graduate school. I have little money. Thank you for your time.

Wanna help, but we don't want to "assume"; you posted in ZX2, so presuming a 3rd Gen Escort/Tracer with a 1.8 engine? Then, do you have the factory radio/stereo? or an aftermarket radio with sophisticated sound stuff?
For starters, you must check the ROOM and MIRROR fuses. Do you have an owner's manual? The fuse box is just below the driver's left knee, and the cover has a diagram with the "names" on it.
Both fuses are on the bottom row.
The ROOM fuse is in the center of the lower five, and the MIRROR fuse is on the far right bottom row.
I know it might seem odd, but the MIRROR fuse does in fact feed to the radio. Of course another test is to simply see if both power mirrors are presently functional.
Also might seem odd, but the 1997 Escort Instrument Panel is illuminated by the TAIL fuse. The Park Lamp Relay and Multi-Function Switch must be functional to illuminate the instrument cluster, so how about THIS?
Do your parking lamps work? Do your turn signals work? These are things that might NOT be the problem, but will help us in getting to the right stuff.

Welcome to the forums. How's the weather in New Jersey ?
To start, I am not familiar with these vehicles specifically. But there are some basics that can be covered.
I assume you've verified that this isn't a case where the fuse keeps blowing; and that the fuse is electrically intact.
Step 1) Put volt meter probes in place of the fuse. Are you getting a power feed at all ?
If not, we need to trace back from that circuit to figure out where the fault lies.
Also be aware that sometimes fuses are stacked. I mean that, there could be another fuse before the room fuse. If you've purchased a Haynes manual, it will contain circuit diagrams that can be used to help trace problems like this. (Manuals and tools quickly pay for themselves and are worth the investment.)
Also, dash, chime, radio may be relevant to the ignition switch. Door lights with some vehicles designs are tied to the same module that controls chime function. This may especially be true if the lights stay on until the key is inserted into the ignition, or a timer expires.
Also keep in mind that it's possible to have more than one (unrelated) issue.
But ignoring all that for now, let's just start with step 1. Are these devices getting power ?
